Wagner Tetralogy:

In early March 2026, to mark the 150th anniversary of its first performance in 1876, the Tetralogy will be revived for two full cycles, each spanning a week, as its composer, Richard Wagner, intended.

After ten years, Teatro alla Scala presents a new production of Richard Wagner's Ring des Nibelungen, conducted by two internationally renowned conductors: Simone Young and Alexander Soddy.

The direction is by David McVicar, one of the most authoritative names on the international directorial scene, who has won acclaim for a vast repertoire at La Scala.

Music: Richard Wagner
Conductor:
Simone Young
Director:
 David McVicar
Cast:
Michael Volle, Camilla Nylund, Klaus Florian Vogt ecc
Orchestra & Choir: Orchestra e Coro del Teatro alla Scala

Plot

The plot revolves around a magical ring that grants the power to rule the world, forged by the Nibelung dwarf Alberich from gold stolen from the Daughters of the Rhine. Wotan, the leader of the gods, steals the ring from Alberich with the help of Loge, but is forced to hand it over to the giants Fafner and Fasolt in payment for building the gods' abode, Valhalla, so as not to have to hand over Freia, who provides the gods with the golden apples that keep them young. Wotan's plans to recover the ring drive much of the story's action. The mortal Siegfried—fulfilling the plan of his grandfather Wotan—wins the ring by killing Fafner (who in turn had killed Fasolt for the ring), but is ultimately betrayed and killed due to the scheming of Hagen, Alberich's son, who desires the ring for himself. Finally, the Valkyrie Brunhild—Siegfried's lover and Wotan's daughter who lost her immortality for defying her father in an attempt to save Sigmund, Siegfried's father—returns the ring to the Rhinemaidens and commits suicide on Siegfried's funeral pyre. Hagen drowns while trying to retrieve the ring. The gods and Valhalla are destroyed by fire (Ragnarök).
