Located on a steep cliff at an altitude of 350 m above sea level and stands on the plateau that divides the valley of the Dragone torrent from that where the Reginna torrent flows. It overlooks Maiori and Minori and offers a famous panoramic view of the Tyrrhenian Sea and the Gulf of Salerno.
Ravello was founded in the 5th century and around the year 1000 it was populated by a group of nobles from the maritime Republic of Amalfi, chosen because it stands in a strategic position, on the southern slopes of the Lattari mountains, overlooking the sea.
Thanks to a flourishing wool spinning mill, agriculture and the intense commercial exchanges carried out on the Mediterranean routes, it quickly became prosperous, and during the following century it confirmed itself as an authentic power.
The economic and political decline began in the Norman era and worsened during the seventeenth century without ever completely recovering it, but it continues to have a naturalistically incomparable site and the architectural and artistic wonders created during the centuries of splendor.

The story goes that Richard Wagner arrived in Ravello in 1880 and at the sight of the garden of Palazzo Rufolo, he found inspiration for the setting of the scenic scene of the second act of Parsifal, as evidenced by the writing in the notice board of the Pensione Palumbo: "The Magical Garden of Klingsor is found.” Wagner's indissoluble connection to Ravello began in the 1930s with the orchestra of the Teatro di San Carlo which performed more than once with programs linked to Wagner and subsequently in 1953, on the occasion of the seventieth anniversary of Wagner's death, they began the “Wagnerian concerts in the Klingsor garden” with two evenings entrusted to the San Carlo Theater Orchestra conducted by Hermann Scherchen and William Steinberg. Wagner has remained a tutelary deity of the festival and particular attention is still paid to his music.
