Piazza delle Erbe
Piazza delle Erbe in Verona is an enchanting and authentic place, characterized by the harmonious superposition of buildings, towers, statues and architectural elements from different eras, making it one of the most beautiful squares in Italy. Historically, it has been the heart of the social, economic and religious life of Verona. Originally, during the Roman era, it housed the Forum, with important buildings such as the Capitoline Hill, Temples and Baths, surrounded by a portico with shops. In the Middle Ages it became the seat of political power and, under the Scala family, a thriving center of arts and commerce. During the Venetian and Austrian domination, the square hosted the civil and criminal court, but it has always been a meeting place and market for citizens. Among the historic buildings is the Palazzo della Ragione, dating back to the 13th century and rebuilt in neoclassical style in the 19th century by the architect Giuseppe Barbieri after various fires. The square is dominated by the Torre dei Lamberti, 84 meters high, the tallest in Verona, begun in 1172 and expanded over time until 1464. Other notable buildings include the Casa dei Giudici, the Case Mazzanti, the Palazzo Maffei, the Torre del Gardello and the Domus Mercatorum, all characterized by a pleasant architectural harmony.
Breakfast in the hotel.
Morning: Meeting with the guide in the hotel lobby to continue the guided walking tour of the center of Verona. During the visit you will admire - from the outside - Porta Nuova open onto Mura Magistrali; the monumental Porta Palio; Castelvecchio home to the Museo Civico; Arco dei Gavi, Porta Borsari and Ponte Pietra cwhich is the oldest bridge in Verona over the Adige, the only one left from the Roman era, made to shine during the Second World War by German soldiers, it was rebuilt by recomposing the stones recovered from river bed. We then continue with the churches of S. Stefano from the 5th century, San Giovanni in Valle from 6th century, e S. Maria in Organo an ancient Benedictine monastery from the Lombard era. And the Giardino dei Giusti, the only sixteenth-century Italian garden in Verona. A green oasis ten minutes from the Arena where collections of flowers, Roman finds and a majestic avenue of cypresses, fountains, acoustic caves and one of the oldest hedge mazes in Europe are visible. A journey of nature, art and history that culminates with a viewpoint from which you can enjoy a splendid view of the city.
