The Theatre's next Music Director, Myung-Whun Chung, marks his eleventh operatic title at La Scala (he has performed over 140 concerts at the venue and on tour) with this new production of Bizet's Carmen, co-produced with London's Covent Garden and Madrid's Teatro Real. Chung is also familiar with French music, having conducted the Opéra Bastille and the Philharmonique de Radio France. Damiano Michieletto and set designer Paolo Fantin minimize local color to create a spare and effective show, focused on the protagonists' inescapable fate.
