Day 1 - Thursday, September 29th ‘22 - arrival in Parma

Arrival in Pesaro by own means. Accomodation at.

Hotel Sina Maria Luigia  - 4*  - https://www.sinahotels.com/it/h/sina-maria-luigia-parma/

The hotel is located in the heart of Parma and, with its pleasant atmosphere, offers a unique and unforgettable experience. The common areas and bedrooms are welcoming and have a classic décor. The hotel also has a bar, and a refined Maxim's restaurant, which offer guests a quality gastronomic experience. The rooms will be available from early afternoon.

4:00 pm: Meeting with the guide in hotel and walking tour through the city stopping to visit Duomo and Battistero.

The Cathedral is considered the finest example of Lombard Romanesque and due to the long history of its construction is a true encyclopedia of styles. The building begun around 1100, in 1526 Correggio created an extraordinary cycle of frescoes in the large dome, inspired by the theme of the Assumption of the Virgin. The other star of the square is the Baptistery, built by Benedetto Antelami at the end of 1100, erected in the place where a stream that served to feed the internal baptismal font was. The whole exterior is decorated with images on the life of Jesus and Mary, the Baptist, the death and resurrection, as well as the decorations of the internal dome tell us about a Jerusalem after the end of the world, with the apostles and evangelists. An unmissable masterpiece.

8:00 pm: Dinner in a selected restaurant

Day 2 - Friday, september 30th ‘22  – Sant’Agata / Busseto

Breakfast in hotel.

Morning: Second day dedicated to Verdi's places outside Parma. The first stop is Villa Verdi in Sant’Agata. Giuseppe Verdi bought the Sant'Agata estate following the advise of Antonio Barezzi. He began the restoration work on the manor house to transfer his parents there. On the death of his mother he decided to move himself to Sant'Agata together with Giuseppina Strepponi and his father occupied the house in Busseto. In this place the composer lived and wrote his music, enjoying the isolation necessary for his creative genius and for his shy and reserved character.

We continue the tour moving to Busseto to visit Teatro Verdi considered a real jewel. A must is Casa Barezzi, seat of the Filarmonica Bussetana founded by Antonio Barezzi. Here the young Giuseppe Verdi had his first musical and emotional training. He met Margherita, his first wife and Barezzi's daughter. The Maestro frequented the house until 1867 and during a stay, as a guest of his father-in-law, he wrote some pages of "I due Foscari" in 1844.

12.30 pm: At the end of the visit, inside the hall of Casa Barezzi, introductory listening lecture held by Prof. Guido Barbieri

1.40 pm: Tasting of typical products in Busseto. At the end return to the hotel in Parma and free time.

8.00 pm: TEATRO REGIO DI PARMA  Festival Verdi: Messa da Requiem  - for choir and Orchestra by G. Verdi   Conductor Michele  Mariotti / Cast: Marina  Rebeka / Vardhui Abrahamyan / Fabio Sartori / Riccardo Zanellato / Orchestra Sinfonica Nazionale della Rai / Coro del Teatro Regio di Parma

Free dinner.

Day 3 - Saturday, October 1st ‘22 –  Parma

Breakfast in hotel.

Morning: Third day dedicated to Correggio and Parmigianino.

Visit of the Monastero di San Giovanni Evangelista, a complex formed by Church, Convent and the Ancient Apothecary of San Giovanni. The church was largely frescoed by Correggio who reached the apex in the decoration of the dome with an extraordinary perspective effect. The artist creates an imaginary open sky on whose clouds the apostles are laid with the figure of Christ in the center.

Following, visit of Camera di San Paolo (o Camera della Badessa), a masterpiece of the Italian Renaissance frescoed by Correggio in 1519. The extraordinary nature of the fresco lies in the illusionary effect: the room has an almost cubic shape completely hidden by the decorations. The abbess to whom the name of the "room" refers is Giovanna da Piacenza, a rich woman, who invited artists and men of culture in Parma.

Free lunch.

Afternoon: Visit of Basilica di Santa Maria della Steccata. The building, whose central Greek cross plan is inspired by Bramante, it is a beautiful example of a Renaissance church. It was built in 1500 and the dome was entrusted to Antonio da Sangallo the Younger. The masterpiece of the basilica is the underside of the dome of the presbytery frescoed by Parmigianino, between 1531 and 1539, his last work before the madness: the wise virgins and the foolish virgins - an example of chromatic sharpness.

In the basement of the Steccata di Parma, here's the suggestive place where the Dukes of Parma were buried before and after the reign of Maria Luigia. it seems that Verdi used to go in this sober crypt dedicated to the Farnese and Borboni, perhaps to draw inspiration from the tomb of Alessandro Farnese, hero of the battle of Lepanto, during the writing of the work "I Lombardi alla Prima Crociata", later dedicated to Maria Luigia.

6.30 pmPre-opera aperitif al Gran Caffè del Teatro

8.00 pm: TEATRO REGIO DI PARMA  Festival Verdi: La Forza del Destino  - di G. Verdi   Conductor Roberto Abbado / Direction Yannis Kokkos / Cast: Anna Pirozzi / Gregory Kunde / Enkhbat  Amartuvshin / Marko  Mimica / Roberto De Candia / Annalisa Stroppa / Andrea Giovannini / Orchestra e Coro del Teatro Comunale di Bologna.

Day 4 - Sunday, October 2nd ‘22 – Parma and departure

Breakfast in hotel and check-out.

Morning: Meeting with the guide in hotel. Visit of Palazzo della Pilotta, symbol of the ducal power of the city, the construction was begun in 1538 by Ottavio Farnese, to house the court services. Today it is the cultural heart of the city. The first part to be built was a "Corridore" connecting with a courtyard where Spanish soldiers often played the "Pelota", hence the name. Over time, other spaces were added to this first section in which to house the Farnese's rich collection of books and works of art. Today the Palace houses the National Archaeological Museum, the Farnese Theater, the Palatine Library, the National Gallery.

Our focus: Teatro Farnese spectacular seventeenth-century court theater, and Galleria Nazionale hosting the Farnese's collection including masterpieces of Correggio, Beato Angelico, Leonardo, Parmigianino, Guercino, Canaletto and Canova.

At the end return to the hotel, farewell and departure by own means.
