Muti and the Wieners: a long friendship

On the podium of the Wiener Philharmoniker, Riccardo Muti will open the XXXV edition of the Festival. The Maestro will return to direct the legendary Viennese team for the opening concert of the 2024 Festival. An opportunity to appreciate some of the most beautiful monuments of Ravenna.

Ravenna is universally recognized as the city of mosaic, an art which finds its highest expression in its historic centre, with roots in ancient Rome. The city is home to a unique heritage of early Christian mosaics from the 5th and 6th centuries AD, the eight UNESCO monuments and the great music of the Ravenna Festival which every year from May to July transforms the entire city into a stage.

6.30 pm: Aperitif in a selected venue.

Day 2 - Sunday May 12th 2024 - Ravenna

9.30 am: Meeting with the guide at the hotel.
Departure on foot for a guided tour of the historic center of Ravenna.
The first stop of the day is a visit to the Monumental Complex including the majestic Basilica of San Vitale near Porta Adriana (6th century mosaics), and the nearby Mausoleum of Galla Placidia, with 5th century mosaics whose cobalt blue tiles embrace a dome of golden stars, Dante's Tomb.

Afternoon: Free time available for relaxation.

Dinner in a selected restaurant.
Overnight stay in hotel.

These mosaics amaze with their aesthetic beauty and the depth of their religious, mystical and political meanings. Ravenna continues to pass down this artistic legacy through world-famous mosaic schools, such as the “Nervi Severini” Art School and the Academy of Fine Arts, which attract international students and artists. Furthermore, the artisan shops scattered throughout the historic center offer the opportunity to closely observe this ancient technique, keeping alive a tradition that defines the cultural identity of the city.

Day 3 - Sunday May 12th 2024 – Departure from Ravenna

09.30 am: Meeting with the guide at the hotel to continue the visit of the city. You will reach on foot the Arian Baptistery built at the end of the 5th century AD. when Arianism was the official religion of the court, then to the Basilica of Sant'Apollinare Nuovo, the ancient palatine church of the Gothic King Theodoric.

Short transfer by coach (5 km) until you reach nearby Classe, where once stood the grandiose military and mercantile port that made Ravenna's real fortune, and where now remains the splendid Basilica dedicated to Saint Apollinaris, the first evangelizer of Ravenna and protagonist in the mosaic of the apse basin, of an extraordinary Epiphany, in direct competition with the Roman cult of Saint Peter. At the end of the visit to Classe, return to Ravenna for free lunch.
