Morning: Meet your guide and depart by bus for Pompeii.
The city buried by the disastrous eruption of Vesuvio in the year 79 A.D., it's today one of the most visited archaeological areas in the world, an impressive example of a city crystallized in its past.
Visiting Pompeii is like traveling into the past; entering houses, public buildings, walking on Roman streets is a bit like listening to the voices of the inhabitants of Pompeii, smelling the penetrating smell of "garum", the ancient fish sauce. The excavations, which began in 1748, have given us a collection of art and everyday objects of inestimable value and a precise and truthful image of a Roman city from 2000 years ago. The eruption of 79 had created a compact tufaceous bank which preserved the city, restoring the life of the ancients to the present.
We will enter the excavations from the amphitheater side and walk along Via Abbondanza, visiting shops, domus, spas, brothels: we will stroll through antiquity. We will then arrive in the forum, in the main square and we will see the casts of the victims, dramatically crystallized during the eruption.
Stop for a snack inside the excavations and then continue the visit to the exciting Via delle Tombe and then Villa dei Misteri, one of the most beautiful villas ever found.
Lunch in a selected restaurant.
Afternoon: Return to Naples by bus.
Free dinner and overnight stay.
Breakfast in the hotel.
Morning: Departure by bus to reach the first stop of our visit: the Duomo, a fundamental place for understanding Caravaggio's influence on Naples. The current Basilica was built in the 13th century in Gothic forms at the behest of Carlo II d’Angiò, on the remains of two ancient factories: the Stefania cathedral and the basilica of Santa Restituta. Inside there is the famous Cappella di San Gennaro: decorative richness, unlimited faith and popular beliefs make this place a foundation of Neapolitanism.
We continue on foot towards another of the key places of our visit: another interesting aspect of not only seventeenth-century Naples is the cult of the dead.
The journey through Neapolitan faith and superstition will lead us to a visit to the Cappella dei Principi di Sangro di Sansevero, a temple of Freemasonry and esotericism, where we will admire the famous statue of the Cristo Velato. Antonio Canova, seeing it, said that he would have donated 10 years of his life to be its creator.
