History
The second Puccini title in the composer’s death centennial year, Turandot marks the return with a work from the grand repertoire of Daniel Harding, notable for his revealing re-readings of the nineteenth- and twentieth-century Italian repertoire. The British conductor, new Music Director of the Accademia di Santa Cecilia, has a well-established artistic relationship with La Scala and its Orchestra dating back to 2005, when he conducted the opening performance of that season, Mozart’s Idomeneo. This new production is directed by Davide Livermore, who has staged numerous acclaimed operas at La Scala in recent years and inaugurated four seasons in a row. In the most recent reprises of the opera, which Puccini left unfinished, Riccardo Chailly chose for the first time at La Scala the finale composed by Luciano Berio; this new production will use the finale by Franco Alfano.
Breakfast in the hotel.
Morning: Meeting with the guide in the hotel lobby and on foot you reach the Brera Art Gallery. Site of historical-artistic importance which collects masterpieces of Italian and foreign art from the 13th to the 20th century. The architectural complex stands on the remains of a fourteenth-century convent, and since the second half of the eighteenth century has housed the Academy of Fine Arts. The museum was created by Napoleon Bonaparte's will, with the aim of bringing together the masterpieces of Italian painting taken from churches and convents suppressed in the years of Milan, capital of the Italian Kingdom to make them available to students undergoing training. Unlike other large Italian museums, therefore, Brera does not originate from private collections but from a state political initiative. The collections have been enriched over the years through exchanges, purchases and donations. We will also visit the Botanical Garden, a romantic green oasis among the buildings of the Brera Palace, a historic garden recognized as a museum. The garden has an ancient history that begins in the 14th century as a place of meditation and cultivation for the Humiliati fathers, then by the Jesuits. In the 18th century, at the behest of Maria Teresa of Austria, when the Brera Palace became a reference center for art, literature and science, the garden was transformed into the Botanical Garden.
Since then, it has served as a place of advanced training in pharmacy and medicine.
Afternoon: Free time available for individual activities and free dinner.
Breakfast in the hotel.
Morning: Meeting with the guide in the hotel lobby to reach the Gallery of Modern Art at Villa Belgiojoso, one of the masterpieces of Neoclassicism in Milan. The villa was built by the Austrian architect Leopoldo Pollack for Count Lodovico Barbiano of Belgiojoso. The formation of the Collection began in 1861, when a collection made up of works by famous contemporary artists from Canova to Marchesi was donated. In 1920, the Collection was enriched with works by Giacomo Campi, Giovanni Carnovali, Giovanni Costa, Tranquillo Cremona, Federico Faruffini, Silvestro Lega, Filippo Palizzi, Gaetano Previati, Daniele Ranzoni, Giovanni Segantini. In 1921, with public subscription, the Quarto Stato by Pellizza da Volpedo became part of the heritage of the Gallery of Modern Art where it is still exhibited today.
